Mongrel dogs are a mixture of different breeds.
Crossbreed dogs are a mixture of two pedigree dogs.
Mongrel and crossbred dogs are unique in relation to their shape and personality, and each dog could be different to the next, you will only know how a puppy will turn out when they mature and reach full size.
Mongrels are usually common in countries where there is little restrictions on dogs roaming freely, dogs in these countries are often not neutered either, leading to lots of little mongrel pups.
Crossbreed dogs either happen by accident or are deliberately crossed to try and produce dog with a specific temperament, shape or coat. All breeds went through this process to get where they are today.
Thinking of buying a mongrel or crossbreed?
Buying a crossbred or mongrel dog can be challenging because of the potentially unknown shape and temperament. So always find out as much as you can about both parents before buying, just like you would do with any pedigree breed. If you’re buying an adult dog try and identify the parents breeds by looking at its shape and character traits.
Interestingly, mongrel dogs are usually healthier than pedigree dogs because their parents are less likely to be related.
